Bed Canopy

My daughter likes to read the Fancy Nancy books.  We read them every night before bed.  Just recently she has started comparing her room to Fancy Nancy's room.  She told me the other day that her room wasn't fancy enough.  I decided to make her a bed canopy to fancy it up a bit.  Of course her only requirement was that it needed to be pink. We bought bright pink tulle, a white boa and a quilting hoop.

I measured floor to ceiling and cut two pieces of tulle and sewed them onto the quilting hoop.

Then I tied two strips of tulle onto the hoop for the canopy to hang from the ceiling.

I hot glued a feather boa to the hoop to finish it off.

Here is the finished product.  I think she likes it.

  3. How pretty! I bet my almost-5-year old would love this. How much tulle did you need to buy?

  4. Thank you! The amount of tulle depends on the height of your ceilings and how high you want to hang it. My ceilings are the standard 8' height. I bought 6 yards of tulle and that worked out perfectly.

  6. Instead of a embroidery hoop my husband bought a 5Ft piece of 1" pex tubing for 2.23, and that worked great, and we connected it on end with dowel that went inside and was a bit cheaper than the embroidery hoop..

    1. Great idea for a cheaper alternative that will last for a long time! Just because it's inexpensive doesn't mean it's not good quality! Those embroidery hoops are WAY too expensive for a DIY project like this! I used to work at a monogramming place, and if we broke or lost one of the hoops, that was NOT good for us! Thx for the grt idea!

  7. Great idea to use pex tubing. I was thinking of using something similar to make a playhouse.

  9. Very cute. I have a wreath base of around 13" in diameter which I think I could use to make one for my 6mo old. Any ideas that it wouldn't work??
Also I have a white tulle cutain set I bought long back but never used, any ideas on how to color it?

  10. Neels- I'd give the wreath base a try and see if you can make it work. I'm sure you can do it. I've never dyed tulle, but I did find a link that tells you how, http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/dyeblog/C1536299029/E20081121082943/index.html

  11. You can dye the tulle, but you need acid dye like the link RIT won't work. However, even nice tulle is like $2 a yard, so it actually might be cheaper to buy the color you want than the dye plus the hassle. It is hard to get it even, but it is a big DIY wedding trend right now to dye the tulle petticoats. If you google it you can find a tutorial.

  17. I love this canopy! I am making it now for my niece but instead of using two widths of tulle I added a third. It's for a full sized bed so I thought with the extra tulle it'll fit better. Thanks for the instructions with pictures! It makes it so much easier!

  20. What size was the hoop you used? I found a hula hoop at the dollar store and thought I would try to use it. Pinching pennies!!

    1. I used a 18" quilting hoop, but the Hula hoop from the dollar store would be your most cost effective route. You might need more tulle since it is a bit bigger.

  21. Did you sew the strips of tulle together?

    1. I actually don't sew the tulle together. The ends won't fray and it makes it easier to drape the canopy if they aren't all sewed together.

  26. What is the width of the tulle you used?

  27. How so you sew the tulle to the quilting hoop?

    1. You fold the tulle over the quilting hoop. Once the hoop is sandwiched between the tulle you sew the fabric together.
